MACTAN-CEBU: VACATION NOW STARTS AT THE AIRPORT

October 2016

As TripAdvisor already started rating airports on its pages, the construction of the world’s first “resort airport” has recently started in the Philippines. Designed by Honk Kong architects IDA, the Terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport will be structured to give the travelers the best holiday experience since their arrival. It will be the Filipino’s government’s first airport public-private partnership project and the first airport this size totally build in glulam.

The new terminal is expected to boost the airport's passenger capacity. GMCAC (GMR and Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation) signed a 25-year concession agreement to manage and refurbish the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, as well as building the new 'resort hotel' which is due for completion in February 2018. Improvements to the airport have already started taking place and included a new security check system to speed up the processing time for departing guests, additional check-ins, immigration counters, waiting areas and redesigned seating areas.

The MCIA is the second busiest airport in the Philippines, catering to a growing number of tourists to the area and it is the gateway to the popular Visayas and Mindanao regions in the Philippines. The roofing of the Mactan Cebu International Airport new Terminal 2 will be covered with 23,400sqm of Riverclack® 550 aluminum panels, pre-painted RAL9007 PVDF 3L, roll formed and curved on site. The color of the panels has been chosen to be sea-water resistant, while the convex and concave curved panels (8m radius) will perfectly integrate the curved harmony of the airport roof. The sunshades, also supplied by Iscom, has been designed to resist the strong winds (up to 200km/h) blowing in the area when a hurricane occurs.
